PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The Term MMA stands for “Mixed Martial Arts”. It is the fastest growing sport in the world and is most famous by the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship). Mixed Martial Arts is a blend of all the martial arts, including boxing, kickboxing, wrestling, judo, jiu-jitsu, Karate, Muy Thai, etc… just to name a few.
In the MMA class we work on 3 major areas; Striking, Takedowns and Submission Grappling. These are the 3 main skill sets every well rounded fighter should have. The Striking focuses on proper body mechanics producing speed and power with limited effort. Learning striking for MMA requires proper foot stance and footwork depending on distance and objective. If you’re a plain boxer with no take down defense, then a well rounded MMA practitioner can bring the fight to the ground and expose your weakness.
The Take downs and Take down defense is extremely important as well. Many Jiu-Jitsu competitors are incredible at attacking and defending on the ground, however if they were to face an opponent with good take down defense and good striking, even the experienced Jiu-Jitsu fighter can have trouble applying his game or style. Our take downs are taught in combination with our stand up striking producing multiple fluid attacks and defense.
The Submission Grappling part of MMA is just as important as the Striking, Take downs and Take down defense. Since Submission Grappling is a lot like Jiu-Jitsu but without the Gi (uniform or kimono), it is the only self defense where you can fight with your back on the ground. Submission Grappling involves angles and proper techniques creating the correct leverage used to defeat a much larger, much strong opponent. Because 80-90% of all fights end up in a clinch or on the ground, here at Lotus Club Miami, We spend most of our time on the Submission Grappling.
Most of the students wear a rash guard or t-shirt and a form of sport or fight shorts to train in. The MMA class is ideal for those looking to get in great condition, as well as those who want to build a solid foundation and possibly look towards a career in MMA.
